what is an encyclical?
Encyclicals are how the Pope communicates important letters to Bishops and local churches. These documents do not necessarily change Church doctrine. They contain the views of the Pope on a particular area of Church doctrine, which usually stresses a certain teaching of the Catholic Church, and principles for the faithful to reflect on. These writings are not “infallible” statements, however, they should be taken very seriously and should challenge us all to grow as disciples of Jesus Christ.
